<poem contributed by tarotcanadaintl@yahoo.com>

Crows have in many cultures, been a bird used in divination,
ritual, art and storytelling. They are also the totem animal
for people born in the sign of Libra. The crow was regarded
in many periods as a messenger of death or harbinger of
misfortune; a number are said to have flown around Cicero's
head on the day he was murdered and crows were said to possess
magical powers. This may have something to do with the crow's
cry of 'cras' - the Latin word for 'tomorrow'.
The crow, as "Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable" puts
it, 'symbolizes contention, discord and strife'. The ravens,
of the crow family, owe part of their sinister reputation to
their odious habit of picking out the eyes of corpses - as
the wicked are warned in Proverbs. It's colour, black,
invested the raven with ideas of darkness, oblivion and
death.
In ancient Greece the raven was an attendant of Apollo.
The Norse people believed that their god Odin possessed
two ravens, which flew around all day collecting information.
In the evening they would perch upon his shoulders, giving
him the latest news they had gathered - a highly economical
form of secret service.
In both the Old and New Testaments the raven figures
frequently, and in Christian history. The ravens fed Elijah,
and St. Benedict is often depicted with a raven at his feet.
It was a raven that brought St. Paul the Hermit a loaf of
bread.
The keeping of ravens at the Tower of London is a strange
tradition, for it is assumed that bad luck will result if they
leave the place. Yet the building itself has so sinister a
history that, far from relieving the all pervading gloom of
the place, some think that the presence of the ravens
heightens it.
A more genial legend persists in the Welsh superstition that
if a blind person is kind to a raven his sight will be
restored. In Cornwall the superstition persists that the soul
of king Arthur took the form of a raven for which reason one of
the species could never be shot. In Brazil a similar belief
exists - it is held that the human soul can inhabit the body of
a raven.
Another pleasant superstition is that crows can bring you good
luck. If you see one flying, your wish will come true as long
as the crow does not flap its wings before going out of sight.
If it should, the wish might still be granted if your cover
your eyes. If the bird is no where in sight when you uncover
them, you'll get your wish.
One curious feature of the behaviour of crows is their seeming
capacity to hold 'courts' at which, by numerous accounts, they
pass judgement and carry out summary execution of such of their
numbers as, for some mysterious reason, they consider deserving
of it. As Edward Stanley, the Victorian naturalist put it:
In the Northern part of Scotland, and in the Faroe Islands,
extraordinary meetings of crows are known to occur. They
collect in great numbers, as if they had all been summoned,
for the occasion; a few of the flock sit with dropping heads,
and the others seem as grave as judges, while others again
are exceedingly active and noisy; in the course of about an
hour they disperse and it is not uncommon, after they have
flown away, to find one or two left dead on the spot.
Another writer (in Dr Edmonston's "Shetland Isles"), says that
these meetings will sometimes continue for a day or two, before
the object, whatever it may be, is complete. Crows continue to
arrive from all quarters during the session. As soon as they
have all arrived, a very general noise ensues, and shortly
after, the whole fall upon one or two individuals, and put them
to death; when this execution has been performed, they quietly
disperse.

Roadtest: The Difference Between a n and a Witch

A n and a Witch each plan to go for a drive. They want
green lights the whole way through their trips. The n first
dresses in her ritual regalia, gets out all her tools, casts a
circle around her car, invokes a deity of transportation, lights
some specially-oiled green candles, smudges her car, concludes
the circle, gets in her car and goes on her way. The Witch, on
the other hand, just gets in her car and goes. At every
intersection she screams "TURN GREEN!" or "STAY GREEN DAMMIT!"

Astral Travel or
Out of Body Experience (OOBE)

Astral projection, known by many different names, has been
practiced and reported as long ago as the beginnings of modern
history. The ancient Egyptians referred to the astral self as
"ba", a spirit with the body and wings of a bird and a human
head. Through the centuries thousands of people have reported
experiences with astral travel. Mystics, scientists, artists,
and housewives have successfully learned to launch their
astral selves and travel out of their physical bodies at will.
One of the first Westerners who wrote about this process was
S. J. Muldoon, whose 1929 book "Projection of the Astral Body"
explains how to launch oneself.
Make sure you are located somewhere that you won't be
disturbed and loosen your clothing. Relax, shut your eyes,
and breath deeply. Let tension and worry drain away. Lie on
your back on a bed or other flat surface and free your astral
self (your consciousness). You travel astrally every night
through your dreams, so this process of freeing the astral
self is simply letting your mind dream, wander or drift while
you are actually awake.
To begin with, you can deliberately induce this split between
the astral and the physical bodies at the moment of falling
asleep by imagining you are flying or rising in some manner.
Teach yourself to remain conscious right up to the moment
that you fall asleep. If you can't focus your attention well
enough for this, and many people can't, try holding one arm
in the air when you go to bed. As you drop off to sleep, the
arm will sway and fall toward the bed. That should give you
a slight jolt, enough to keep you aware, but not enough to
awaken you entirely.
First your astral form disengages and floats a few inches
above the physical body. To enable this disengagement,
envision your consciousness hanging outside your body,
slightly above you about a foot in front of your forehead.
Then little by little move the focal point forward until you
have focused about six to eight feet from your physical body.
Next imagine how pleasant and delightful it would be to lift
out of your body and float overhead. Eventually the astral
self gradually begins to rise horizontally and move away as
it assumes an upright position. The two entities, astral and
physical, are attached to one another by a long elastic and
flexible cord between the heads, so there is no particular
danger of the two parts of your being becoming separated.
To return, simply reverse the process. There is a warning
necessary here for folks with heart or other serious
physical ailments to not attempt this type of travel because
the experience for novices can be quite startling. Always be
cautious when you embark in this new fashion, because if you
travel to another plane, you might encounter hostile energy
or unpleasant experiences. Until you are familiar with the
process, particularly for returning to your physical body,
stick to visiting all those places you have always wanted to
see, right here on the surface of the planet earth.

Trivial Tidbit

Egads, It's Raining Frogs!

Throughout history, there have been tales of raining frogs.
These stories, as crazy as they may seem, are actually real
events! From Biblical tales of Egyptian storms to British
towns suddenly finding themselves covered with frogs falling
from the sky, such events are caused when a wind storm
passes over a pond or lake, picking the creatures up and
dumping them elsewhere! It is unknown why the tornado or
whirlwind air currents are so species selective.
The Bible describes a rain of manna and quails more than 3,000
years ago. At that time this was looked upon as a supernatural
event. The rain of manna has happened often in modern times;
the manna being a lichen that grows in great abundance after
rainfall.
In February 1998, it rained fine sand over parts of England.
People heard radio announcements telling them the phenomenon
was caused by a freak storm picking up sand in the Sahara
desert and blowing it thousands of miles north to Britain.
The sand was followed in March by very tiny frogs falling in
Croydon.
The British are getting used to weird things falling from the
sky. Fish fell on London in 1984 and six large flounders,
still alive, were recovered from the streets. In the same year,
starfish arrived from the clouds in North Yorkshire.
The inhabitants of Bristol recalled the old song, Pennies from
Heaven, in 1956. A shower of pennies and halfpennies fell for
over two minutes. No one knows how much money landed, but
children formed happy queues at sweet shops.
More frogs fell again in Scotland in 1995. Scotland was also
the scene of a huge fall of ice in the 1800's. Ice falls in
the past few years have been attributed to aircraft. Richard
Griffiths of Manchester University collected ice which he
witnessed falling in 1973. Obtaining some large fragments, he
froze them pending analysis and checked the airport for details
of any aircraft flying overhead. The airport confirmed that no
planes had been in the vicinity at the time of the ice fall.
When analysing the ice he found that the ice was of a similar
type to that in hailstones.
We have all heard the expression "it's raining cats and dogs."
There are several theories about this saying. It is possible
that the word cat is derived from the Greek word 'catadupe'
meaning 'waterfall.' Or it could be raining 'cata doxas,'
which is Latin for 'contrary to experience,' or an unusual
fall of rain. In Northern mythology the cat is supposed to have
great influence on the weather, and English sailors still say
the cat has a gale of wind in her tail when she is unusually
frisky. Witches that rode upon the storms were said to assume
the form of cats; and to this day the stormy northwest wind
is called the cat's nose in the Harz mountains. The dog is a
sign of wind, like the wolf. Both animals were attendants of
Odin, the storm-god. In old German pictures the wind is figured
as the "head of a dog or wolf," from which blasts issue. The
cat therefore symbolizes the down-pouring of rain, and the dog
the strong gusts of wind that accompany a rainstorm; and a rain
of "cats and dogs" is a heavy rain with wind.
Another theory suggests that in medieval times cats and dogs
sheltered in the thatched roofs of peasant huts during storms,
and a severe storm rousted these animals causing them to fall
from their perches, and thus 'rain' down onto the ground.
In spite of a fish fall in India in which
more than ten people picked up fish weighing up to eight
pounds, and many accounts of rains of ice-coated ducks,
grasshoppers, fish, and frogs, there is no account of a
raining of cats and dogs.
There are lists of dozens of examples of weird rain, all
over the world, including alabaster, ants, ashes, beef,
beetle larvae, berries, bitumen, blood, butter, charcoal,
china fragments, cinders, coal, cobwebs, coins, crabs,
crayfish, eels, fish, flesh, flowers, frogs, gelatinous
matter, grain, ham sandwiches, hay, iron balls, jelly fish,
limestone, lizards, mud, mussels, oyster shells, periwinkles,
quartz, resin, salt, sand, sandalwood, seeds, silk, snails,
snakes, spawn, spiders, stones, turtles,
but NEVER an actual report of "cats and dogs"!
