         THE YEAR OF THE MONKEY
        (The Chinese New Year)

The following is a short summary of how each Eastern
animal sign will fare in this the year of the Monkey. This
new occidental year began on January 22nd, 2004.

There is a quick reference chart so that you can
determine your Chinese astrological sign (if you don't
already know it) available in my newsletter archives at
http://www.Athamz.com/archives/march01.html and
the following is a precis of what you can expect in this,
the year of the Monkey.

How the Various Signs Fare in the Year of the Monkey
                           by Theodora Lau

The Rat
The Rat will enjoy a fruitful year as no serious troubles
are predicted on the home or business front.  S/he will
receive more good news than bad.  However s/he
should avoid breaking friendships or partnerships at this
time to avoid future repercussions.

The Ox
A lucky and prosperous year for the Ox.  S/he will be
feted or sought after by important people.  Good
tidings in his or her family or a new job or promotion
could await him or her.  New ventures or partnerships
can be foreseen.

The Tiger
A trying year for the Tiger.  Irritations and setbacks
test his or her patience and powers of endurance.
S/he should not voice his or her objections too loudly
and avoid confrontations which could lead to lawsuits.
S/he will entertain or travel more than usual and be
forced to compromise.

The Rabbit
A fair year for the Rabbit provided s/he is not too
optimistic.  Financial deals or contracts may meet
with unexpected snags or fail to materialize due to
the betrayal of a trusted ally.  His or her family life
remains calm but s/he could experience several
minor illnesses that impede his or her progress.

The Dragon
A mixed year for the Dragon, as unexpected
problems arise from nowhere and plans go awry.
A time in which s/he must try his or her best to
avoid confrontation with his or her enemies or
those who do not agree with his or her views.
S/he could relieve tension by changing his or her
environment or dealing through trusted associates.

The Snake
A good year as the Snake will find help when
s/he needs it most.  S/he may still be involuntarily
drawn into disputes but things will burn themselves
out if s/he does not add fuel to the fire.  Still, these
adverse conditions may cause undue anxiety.
A year to remain conservative or neutral.

The Horse
A lucky year for the Horse, as sudden gains or
unlikely benefits are foreseen.  S/he will be able to
find whatever s/he is searching for, but s/he must
also be careful about freak accidents that are likely
to occur.  There may be sad news in the family, but
the troubles of others will not affect him or her
personally.

The Sheep
A good year for the Sheep.  Recognition or
promotion at work gives him or her a sense of
fulfillment and s/he will enjoy a busy but rewarding
year.  Opposition is negligible and health problems
minor.

The Monkey
An excellent time for the Monkey native.  S/he
can start his or her own business as achievements,
happiness and recognition are indicated.  S/he will
make fantastic progress. Headaches will come
mainly from subordinates, debtors, or people who
finance his or her bold undertakings.  Health
problems stem from over exertion.

The Rooster
A mixed year.  The Rooster is faced with financial
problems, failure in business or career, or personal
suffering at home.  S/he is prone to make errors in
judgment, so s/he must not rely on outside
information but investigate everything thoroughly
on his or her own.  Things may look better than they
actually are.

The Dog
A fair year.  It will be hectic and not as fruitful as
the Dog expects, but there will be good news or
celebrations at home.  Extra expenses, more
traveling than usual or a change in residence are
also foreseen.  New friends and important people
will fete him or her.

The Boar
A moderately satisfying time for the Boar.  S/he
will suffer from a lack of money or support and
various domestic and personal problems will occupy
his or her mind.  Results are not entirely favourable
but s/he will be able to borrow money or join forces
with other people and solve whatever difficulties.

                 MONEY MAGIC -
           Spells and Enchantment to Attract
                     Wealth and Abundance
                By Antonia Beattie
          Raincoast Books - ISBN 1-55192-309-2

This refreshing little (only 79 pages) Canadian
offering, is a completely fun and enlightening read.
Did you even suspect that flushing your toilet with
the lid down improves the likelihood of an adequate
cash flow?
Sometimes simply empowering oneself through a
ritual or thought process, in what seems to be a
hopeless financial situation, lifts a person’s spirits
so much that they can then actually start to logically
help themselves as opposed to remaining mired in
their own anxiety.
Ms. Beattie talks about attracting wealth to oneself,
by identifying fortunate symbols, using intuition,
candle magic (see newsletter archives) and your
own intuition.  She makes very sage comments on
the negative effect of greed.
She also touches on astrology and the seasons in
how to identify when you could expect yourself to
be more lucky.  When making your own charms,
talismans or amulets, she gives instructions and
discusses ethics.
Feng Shui provides the advice about your
toilet lid.  And Goldfish, as their name implies,
represent the benefits you are wishing for, so these
humble pets also magically draw the right kind of
energy to your wallet!

I highly recommend this tome for advice and
entertainment.

                  The Humour Offering

A frog telephones the Psychic Hotline and is told,
"You are going to meet a beautiful young girl who
will want to know everything about you."
The frog says, "This is great! Will I meet her at a
party, or what?"
"No," says the psychic. "Next semester in her
biology class."

              A Spring Cleaning Blessing

When you want to clean your space, it is wise to
consider cleansing the psychic energy in the area
as well.  Try doing a simple clearing and blessing
ceremony.   Here is one basic method.

* Clarify your intention - what is the feeling  that you
want to purge from the space, and what energy do
   you wish to call in?
* Next get some assistance. Even if  you are skilled
at working with subtle energies, it is not advisable
to attempt clearing in your own home by yourself,
because it can be exhausting to shift a pattern that
could be intricately connected to your own energy.
Get a friend to help you with your ceremony.
* The day before you spiritually clear the space,
physically and thoroughly clean the whole place
   from top to bottom.
* The day of the ceremony, relax and quiet your mind.
Breathe deeply and slowly and notice the sensations
   of your physical body.
* At first, place some bowls of salt around the house,
as salt has the function of absorbing negative chi.
* Now, release stagnant energy through the use of
sound. You can use bells, drums, or simply clap
your hands to get the desired effect. Walk around
the space slowly and use your instrument to send
sound vibrations into all the corners of the room.
* Next purify the space through the use of fire. The
traditional way is to burn incense, sweet grass or
sage, but if you are allergic to these, you can also
place candles throughout the space and simply let
   them burn for a while.
* After this purification by fire, open up the windows
to allow fresh air to circulate in the space, and
dispose of the salt, by either burying it or flushing it
down the toilet.  Allow the air to clear.
* Next you bless the space with water and call in
your new intended energy. You may want to
sprinkle spring water throughout the room, or place
some water with added essential oils in a spritzer
and spray it around the room.
* Finally, ground your new energy by carefully
placing a symbol of the earth element in the space,
such as a green plant, a crystal, or a personally
meaningful object while focusing on your intentions,
and leave the object there for at least a couple of
weeks to ensure that your intentions have a chance
to fully root themselves in the space.

                        GOD will Get ‘Em!

Injustice and lies are infuriating.  Ours is a far from
perfect world.   Have a look at Psalm 109 in the Bible
and you will realize that venting and raving about having
been wronged is part of the eternal human condition.
Retaliation or revenge is a natural desire to even the
score.  As normal human beings we either vocalize or
fantasize about solving whatever inequity, but some
people become far too active in this desire.

First I decided to examine just exactly what “curse”
does mean.

1. Swearword: a swearword or obscenity or
    blasphemous oath
2. Evil Prayer: a malevolent appeal to a supernatural
being for harm, to wish evil on
3. Source of Harm: a source of unhappiness or harm,
    cause suffering to
4. A religious Ban:  an ecclesiastical source of censure

The word hex is sometimes used synonymously with
curse.  It is believed that the authority of the person who
lays the curse, increases its potency and makes it more
dangerous. Such persons are believed to be priests,
priestesses or royalty; persons possessing magical skill,
such as witches, sorcerers and magicians; and persons
who have no other recourse to justice, such as women
in many societies, the poor, the destitute and the dying.
Deathbed curses are the most potent, since all the
curser’s vital energy goes into the curse.

In Greece in the 5th century B.C. curses were
accomplished by merely scratching the victim’s
name on a thin sheet of lead and tossing that into
graves, pits, or wells, thus handing the victim over to
the care of the demons and the ghosts of the dead.
As time went on, such tablets became more elaborate,
with long texts and elaborate designs, and preparation
entailed complex rituals.  Around the beginning of the
twelfth century A.D., English kings began imposing
fines on those caught cursing or swearing at their
courts.  A law was repealed in Maryland in 1953 to
finally do away with fines for oaths.  With this trend
of declining value, swear words will soon be worthless
and need not be used at all.  Without oaths, some folks
will simply not speak.  (Probably a bonus.)  The value
attached to vulgar language has been reduced to nearly
nothing.  Now even our most feared words have been
reduced to meaningless intensives becoming words
which serve no basic function but to make a statement
slightly objectionable.  So much for verbal cursing.

Curses through history have ranged from timid to
terrorizing and still are most frequently used by
spurned lovers, competitors and businessmen.
Cursing used to be serious business. When literacy
was a rare and highly valued ability, writing was held
to contain innate power. By writing down what one
wished to accomplish, a person expected some sort
of result to come of it.  Of course curses always work
better when aimed at someone who believes in the
power of sympathetic magic.  There is a belief that if
the victim knows that he has been cursed and believes
that he is doomed, that the curse is all the more potent
because the person helps to cause his own demise.
However, many claim that curses can be just as
effective without the victim’s knowledge of them.
This group prefer to never let the victim know the
curse has been laid because then s/he might go to a
sorcerer seeking to get it removed.

The process of wishing evil on others was recounted
in the oral traditions of  Native American cultures.
Buddha was thought to have the supernatural power
to send curses and calamities.  The Christian church

excommunicated folks for cursing and swearing.  A
curse calls for Divine wrath.  The practice of cursing
exists in most cultures.  But, who among us has the
capacity to judge as God does?

My research led me to the rationalizing argument:
“Wouldn't you join in cursing another Hitler?”
Because cursing the devil is not considered sinful, this
rationalization drifts to encompass black or aggressive
magic and voodoo pursuits.  This is an all too active
fashion for revenge from my ethical perspective.  It is
here that the practitioners' otherwise innocuous
activities acquire a very sinister tone.  The universal
method of laying on a curse in these practices is by
effigy, an image or representation of the victim.  I am
not here providing any instructions for creating such
poppets.  As the effigy is harmed or destroyed, so the
victim is harmed or killed.  Hearts, animal corpses or
objects that quickly decompose, such as eggs, might
be buried in the ground with spells that the victim will
die as the objects deteriorate.  It has been frequently
claimed that gems and crystals possess the power to
hold curses, which then pass along to the current
owners throughout the ages.  Other modern day active
ways to harm people are of course with malicious
gossip, spreading lies, harassment through contemporary
rat phone lines, and simply mental concentration to send
misfortune to the offender.

But from personal experience, I can assure you that
cursing is harmful to the person doing the cursing.
What you think of as working for your own benefit can
bring serious harm to innocent third parties.  The karma
of their pain will be on you.  And worst of all, the act of
cursing leaves a stain on your soul.  The curse or hex is
a dreadful secret that besmirches you.  It’s much better
to leave the details of revenge to God.  Sometimes you
even get to watch His natural justice unfold.  That is
when cold revenge is served so sweetly.  Lingering,
painful illness, lonely prolonged old age, rejection by
loved ones, etc.  God has a myriad of ways to punish,
and he is obviously much more creative than either you
or I could ever pretend to be.

“Curses are like young chickens, they always come
home to roost.”

By Robert Southey (1774 to 1843),
English Poet and Writer.

There is great wisdom within that quote.

                           Trivial Tidbit

                Not Enough Sweet Dreams?

Researchers around the world have found that
human beings tend to dream the same kinds of
dreams, although with subtle differences. Men,
for instance, tend to be more aggressive in their
dreams, particularly with other men, and women
tend to dream of interactions with friends.
But most of our dreams are unpleasant.
"About two-thirds of our dreams are unpleasant,"
the experts say. "And we wonder why."
- Lee Dye,  ABCNews.com

From Robert Moss' book, "Conscious Dreaming",
here are some suggestions for working your way
through nightmares.

1.  Dialogue with your fears.  Ask yourself:  What
is blocking me?  What am I running away from?
Why am I afraid to finish this dream?

2.  Dialogue with your dream adversary.  Ask
whatever is menacing you: Who are you?  What
are you doing in my dream?  What are you trying
     to tell me?

3.  Rescript the role of your dream self.  Ask
yourself what would happen if you changed your
attitudes and actions in the dream you left
     unresolved.

4.  Dream the dream onward.  Imagine the dream
unfolding beyond the point at which you woke up.
If you don't like what seems to be happening, see
if you can't create a happier outcome, maybe by
calling up some help.  But don't be content with a
cute solution that seems less real than the original
dream.  You may find that resolving this dream
requires action from you in outer reality as well as
     inside the dreamscape.

5.  Invoke allies.  It's okay to ask for help.  You
may even be about to discover that your dream
adversaries are allies in disguise.  We can learn
a lot from shamans about this, as in the case of
dream tigers, who figure with surprising frequency
even in the dreams of modern Westerners who
have never seen a tiger outside a zoo or circus.

We need to confront dream adversaries, not run away
from them.  If we flee from a scary dream, we need
to learn how to go back inside it and face up to our
fears.  It's okay to call for help in order to do this.
When we overcome dream adversaries, they
become friends and helpers.
