FEELING GOOD The New Mood Therapy
By David D. Burns, M.D.
Avon Books, ISBN: 0-380-71803-0
This
self-help paperback provides a useful and
successful
cure/relief for depression. Written by a
psychiatrist,
he amazingly does NOT suggest drug
therapy
as a first alternative. Why, you may ask, is
this
relevant in a psychic newsletter? Although the
statistics
say that one in four people suffer from some
type
of mental illness, as a psychic consultant I find
that
too many of my clients lack confidence or self
esteem
or are simply viewing their situation in a
pessimistic
or depressed fashion. Once you are
depressed
it becomes nearly impossible to make
constructive
choices and take reasoned action and in
that
way change your situation for the better."Feeling
Good"
also has a similarly titled and more expensive
workbook
available for those who absorb information
better
when they themselves write it down. I feel the
meat
of the knowledge is there for the taking in the
economical
paperback.
The
book talks about dealing with depression, without
drugs,
simply by using a cognitive approach, which
adjusts
your own ways of thinking about yourself, the
world,
other people and the events that unfold for you.
Dr.
Burns says we have 10 ways in which we distort
our
thinking, and that list includes:
1.
All or Nothing Thinking (never accepting that
partial success has value)
2.
Overgeneralization (feeling that one major failure
defines failure at everything)
3.
Mental Filters (only seeing or looking for the
negatives)
4.
Disqualifying the Positive (belittling previous or
lateral successes)
5.
Jumping to Conclusions (assumptions make an
"ass" out of "u" and "me")
6.
Magnification and Minimization (over and under
exaggeration of the importance of things)
7.
Emotional Reasoning (reasoning is logical
otherwise it is merely emotional reaction)
8.
Should Statements ("should" as a word includes
value judgments and recriminations)
9.
Labeling and Mislabeling (one incident doesn't
rationalize a label)
10.
Personalization (taking things too personally)
There
is also a quick checklist by which a person
can
evaluate their state of mental health in terms of
depression
and there are 7 components identified
within
people’s personal philosophies of life that can
help
them determine where their thinking may be going
askew
with suggestions for putting those thoughts back
into
balance.
The
inner dialogue that runs constantly within our mind
talks
to us about how we feel about ourselves. You
might
notice that you are more insulting and unforgiving
with
yourself than you would be with a complete
stranger.
This
book taught me to be fair to myself, only to make
reasonable
expectations of others and myself and to
notice
when I am too preoccupied by negatives. For
me,
those concepts are signposts for avoiding
depression.
If
a person deals only with their own feelings, starts
to
respect their self, acknowledges and expresses
their
needs and rights, particularly in regard to people
who
are frustrating or disappointing them, they can
usually
figure out the right course of action without a
psychic.
One lady once told me that I tended to shoot
myself
in the foot in this business, but if people, through
better
mental health, can deal more successfully with
their
problems I sure don’t mind loosing whatever
percentage
of my business. The last thing in the world
I
wish to do is to exploit others’ vulnerabilities through
my
readings.
This
is a great book for getting a handle on how not to
contribute
to your own problems, and sometimes even
get
mobilized to solve them completely! Not an easy
read,
but a very worthwhile one.

The Humour Offering
WHY
DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD??
Buddha's
Answer: If you ask this question, you deny
your
own chicken nature.
Carl
Jung's Answer: The confluence of events in the
cultural
gestalt necessitated that individual chickens
cross
roads at this historical juncture, and, therefore,
synchronicitously
brought such occurrences into being.
M.C.
Escher's Answer: That depends on which plane
of
reality the chicken was on at the time.
Colonel
Sanders' Answer: I missed one?

Try Invisible Writing Predictions!
A
rather unusual form of candle divination involves
the
remarkable properties of fresh lemon juice. Obtain
a
clean pen (the type used for calligraphy), neither ball
point
nor felt-tip, since no ink-filled pen nor a pencil can
be
used. A sharpened, short stick may be substituted.
Squeeze
the juice from a lemon into a small bowl. Lay
three,
five or seven small pieces of paper on a flat
surface.
Dipping the pen into the lemon juice, write a
variety
of realistic possible future outcomes about some
issue
that concerns you on each piece of paper with the
juice;
the juice here acting as the ink. Since lemon juice
is
invisible and difficult to write with, keep these
"futures"
to just a few words. Then allow them to dry.
Light
a candle. Place the slips of paper into a bowl.
Mix
them with your hands, then choose one at random.
Hold
the chosen piece of paper close enough to the
flame
to heat it but not close enough to burn it. The
heat
will reveal the prediction previously written on the
paper
as the lemon juice darkens. This will ascertain
the
probable future outcome.
Now
remember, don't cheat by choosing a 2nd paper.
If
it wasn't the prediction you were hoping for, let
events
unfold and find out just how accurately this
method
works for you.
Have
Fun!

My FAQ
Hello
Atham,
Do
you believe that people who consult with negative
entities
to help them do psychic readings might also
become
emotionally unstable? (Earlier a psychic
accused
me of attacking her with negative comments
and
said that she was going to report me. Either a
hacker
broke in and made it look like I did it or she
typed
in the negative message herself. Her energy
gave
me the impression she might even be mentally
unstable.)
I
don't usually make it a habit of asking God for help
from
angels, but I am just starting to try to make it a
habit
to ask for help in prayers. What types of prayers
do
angels answer that they consider important?
Thank
you for your time.
Margaret
Hello,
I
recommend praying to God, about important and
positive
things for yourself and those you care about.
Let
God determine which angel might help or guide
you.
I do believe that the focus of positive intent
while
praying causes the act of praying to be powerful
and
to actually work.
If
a psychic is consulting with entities (even guardian
angels)
that they don't understand, of course at times
the
guidance and their subsequent actions or advice
might
be very skewed. If anyone is putting too much
control
of their life or actions in the hands of "entities"
I
feel it is obvious that they are inviting mental
instability
by looking to someone or something else to
be
in control of and responsible for their lives and
actions.
I
don't suggest that every channeller taps into negative
spirits,
but I don't have much faith or trust in people
who
make loud proclamations about spirits being the
sole
source of their insights.
I
hope this answer has helped you in some way.
Bests

Herbs for Happy Dreaming
Just
as we place sachets of potpourri to sweeten the
scent
of our clothes in our drawers, the smell and
properties
of herbs can greatly affect other aspects
of
our lives. The following is a list of some
recommendations
for crafting happy dreams with
herbs.
Dream
Divination:
For
insights into the future, burn frankincense, dried
jasmine
flowers, or mugwort in bedroom before going
to
sleep. Tea brewed from mugwort or rosebuds will
also
work. You can also sleep with ash leaves, bay
leaves,
cinquefoil, heliotrope, holly, jasmine flowers,
marigold
flowers, mimosa, mugwort, onion, or yarrow
under
your pillow.
Dreams
of Guidance for Love matters:
Sleep
with any of the following herbs above your bed
or
underneath your pillow; cinquefoil, marjoram,

Mugwort
is a very potent herb for aid in astral
projection
and lucid dreaming when burned as incense
or
placed under pillow while sleeping. Brew a tea
from
mugwort and drink it just before going to bed in
order
to strengthen psychic and magical dream powers.
Prophetic

Make Your Own Fortune Cookies
I
was delighted to find this simple recipe for making
my
own fortune cookies. Sometimes the lowly wisdom
offered
in these treats can be very helpful in life.
1/4 cup sifted cake flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
dash salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 egg white
1 tablespoon water
1.
Before preparing cookies, write fortunes with
predictions
of good health, prosperity and happiness
on
small slips of paper.
2.
Sift together the flour, sugar, cornstarch and salt.
Add
oil and egg white; stir until smooth. Add water
and
mix well.
3.
Make one cookie at a time by pouring 1 tablespoon
of
the batter on a lightly greased skillet or griddle.
4.
Spread to a 3 1/2 inch circle. Cook over low heat
about
4 minutes or until lightly browned. Turn with a
wide
spatula; cook 1 minute more.
5.
Working quickly, place cookie on a pot holder. Put
paper
strip with fortune in the center; fold cookie in
half.
Then bend folded cookie over the edge of a bowl
to
give it the "C" shape. Place in muffin pan to cool.
Makes
8 cookies.
For
the fortunes, use your imagination and some
humour.
One of my favourites read like this - "Better
to
wear glasses than to raise them." Or use those old
Charlie
Chan movie witticisms - "Truth like oil in time
rise
to surface." The possibilities are endless!

Trivial Tidbit
Magical Brooms or Besoms
Brooms
are often used for magic or ritual purposes.
Perhaps
to invoke deities, banish negativity, or direct
energy
through thought and intentions. In this day
and
age they are very popular because of the "Harry
Potter"
Quidditch craze.
You
can purchase brooms in your local occult shop,
but
they also can be found in a variety of surprising
places
- antique and junk shops, swap meets, yard
sales
and flea markets The broom is no more right
or
special if you swapped for it than if you made it
or
bought it new. In any case, whatever time and
effort
you expend searching for or making your own
broom
is well worth it
The
old picture of the witch riding around on the
broom's
stick when casting magic spells is believed to
have
come from a agricultural fertility rite, where the
women
rode around the fields (like on a hobby horse),
with
the broom between their legs, hoping to bring the
farmers
a good harvest.
Many
pagan traditions have the bridal couple, jump
across
the broom, a symbol of fertility (another old bit
of
agricultural fertility magic), to signify the desire for
children
and the establishment of their new household.
The
brooms are usually decorated for the occasion and
then
kept in a place of honor in the home. Historically,
brooms
made great wedding gifts, just add a little ribbon,
some
flowers, and no wrapping is required. Every new
home
needs a new broom! Taking an old broom to a
new
home brings any residual bad luck along with it.
Possibly
because of it's phallic shape, the broom
became
a powerful tool against curses and practitioners
of
evil magic. Laid across a threshold, the broom halts
all
spells sent to the house or to those who reside within.
Many
witches keep a besom by or hanging from their
door
to protect the home from unwanted outside
energies.
Placed under the pillow, it brings pleasant
dreams
and guards the dreamer at the same time.
Besoms
have been used by witches to indicate to
other
occultists that they were resident, or at work,
by
placing a broom outside the door. This is NOT to
say
that anyone who has a kitchen broom sitting outside
their
door is a witch.
European
witches became identified with the broom
and
were accused of flying on broomsticks, and this
was
considered proof of their alliance with the "dark
powers."
Such an act, if it could be performed, would
indeed
be supernatural, and therefore "of the Devil" in
the
eyes of persecutors, in contrast to the simple healing
and
love spells that witches actually performed.
A
witch may begin a ritual by sweeping the area
(indoors
or out) lightly with the magic broom, while
visualizing
the psychic dirt being swept out of the
ritual
area. The broom's bristles needn't actually
touch
the ground. The sweeping also helps to get the
mind
ready for the ritual, quieting thoughts and
narrowing
the focus for the witch. The besom is a
purifier
and is related to the element of Water. Thus
it
is used in all types of water spells including those
of
love and psychic workings.
If
you wish to make your own magic broom, you
might
try the standard old magical formula of an ash
staff,
birch twigs and a willow binding. The ash is
protective,
the birch purifying, and the willow is
sacred
to the Goddess. Of course, a branch from
any
tree or bush can be used within the broom. And
while
cutting it, make sure to thank whatever tree for
it's
sacrifice. A tiny broom of pine needles can be
another
alternative.
Suggested
plants for making your own broom include,
Yarrow,
Cedar, Juniper, fruit tree sprigs and Oak tree
sprigs.
If there are certain qualities or capacities you
wish
for your broom to carry, do a bit of herbal research
and
add whatever additional plants you feel would help
you
achieve your goals.
Bundle
plants together and tie cut ends together. The
bundle
may then be tied to a branch if a longer handle
is
desired. Once assembled, sturdier sprigs and branches
can
be lacquered to help keep young Quidditch
enthusiasts
from damaging their brooms during
enthusiastic
matches!
